Inelastic Deformable Image Registration (i-DIR): Capturing Sliding Motion through Automatic Detection of Discontinuities

چکیده
Deformable image registration (DIR) is an image-analysis method with a broad range of applications in biomedical sciences. Current DIR on computed-tomography (CT) images the lung and other organs under deformation suffer from large errors artifacts due to inability standard methods capture sliding between interfaces, as transformation models cannot adequately handle discontinuities. In this work, we aim at creating novel inelastic deformable (i-DIR) that automatically detects surfaces capable handling discontinuous motion. Our relies introduction regularization term formulation, where characterized shear strain. We validate i-DIR by studying synthetic datasets strong motion, compare its results against two elastic formulations using landmark analysis. Further, demonstrate applicability medical CT registering images. show delivers accurate estimates local strain are similar fields reported literature, do not exhibit spurious oscillatory patterns typically observed methods. conclude locates regions arise dorsal pleural cavity, delivering significantly smaller than traditional

Sliding Geometries in Deformable Image Registration
Regularization is used in deformable image registration to encourage plausible displacement fields, and significantly impacts the derived correspondences. Sliding motion, such as that between the lungs and chest wall and between the abdominal organs, complicates registration because many regularizations are global smoothness constraints that produce errors at object boundaries. We present local...
متن کاملEvaluation of deformable image registration in HDR gynecological brachytherapy
Introduction: In brachytherapy, as in external radiotherapy, image-guidance plays an important role. For GYN treatments it is standard to acquire at least CT images and preferably MR images prior to each treatment and to calculate the dose of the day on each set of images. Then, the dose to the target and to the organs at risk (OAR) is calculated with worst case scenario from I...
متن کاملAutomatic Rigid and Deformable Medical Image Registration
Advanced imaging techniques have been widely used to study the anatomical structure and functional metabolism in medical and clinical applications. Images are acquired from a variety of scanners (CT/MR/PET/SPECT/Ultrasound), which provide physicians with complementary information to diagnose and detect specific regions of a patient. However, due to the different modalities and imaging orientati...
متن کاملEvaluation of Deformable Image Registration (DIR) Methods for Dose Accumulation in Nasopharyngeal Cancer Patients during Radiotherapy
Introduction Deformable image registration (DIR) is used to modify structures according to anatomical changes for observing the dosimetric effect. In this study, megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) images were used to generate cumulative doses for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients by various DIR methods. The performance of the multiple DIR methods was analysed, and the impact of dose accu...
متن کاملAccuracy of eight deformable image registration (DIR) methods for tomotherapy megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) images
INTRODUCTION The application of deformable image registration (DIR) to megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) images benefits adaptive radiotherapy. This study aims to quantify the accuracy of DIR for MVCT images when using different deformation methods assessed in a cubic phantom and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. METHODS In the control studies, the DIR accuracy in air-tissue and t...
